This course is designed for individuals assigned the responsibility of conducting internal affairs investigations.  

Upon completion, students will be able to:

  • Have an understanding of current issues involving IA investigations
  • Evaluate complaints and determine the proper classification, investigative approach, and departmental follow-up
  • Conduct and complete an investigation that examines an officer's behavior and establishes a preponderance of information or lack thereof in determining outcomes
  • Document the investigation in a similar manner for each inquiry to ensure consistency and ease of retrieval

The class will cover the current issues involving police misconduct that have had an impact on law enforcement.  High profile cases will be discussed and lessons learned examined.  The rights afforded employees, Administrative Warnings (Garrity) will be examined as well as employee rights during the process.
