Week 1 - You will learn the proper procedures for measuring, scale diagramming, and photographing in order to record physical evidence and essential facts available only at the crash scene. You will learn the fundamentals of mathematics, physics, and engineering as they pertain to crash investigations and the proper mathematical equations to apply for the type of crash being investigated. Finally, you will learn to analyze the information to determine what happened before, during, and after the collision.

Topics Include

  • Physical evidence from the roadway
  • Physical evidence from the vehicle
  • The human element and occupant kinematics
  • Mathematical principles and equations
  • Skid marks and vehicle speeds
  • Crash scene photography
  • Traffic templates
  • Measuring and scale diagramming
  • Driver and witness interviews
  • Information analysis and case preparation

Week 2 -

-Module 1 Critical Speed Yaw

-Module 2 stresses recognition and collection of related crash data contained on Air Bag and Supplemental Restraint Devices in supported crash vehicles with the Bosch CDR Kit. Students are provided instruction on the use of Faro Zone / Crash Zone Software for the purpose of expediting the development of precise and comprehensive collision scene diagrams. This module will introduce students and provide instruction on using Total Station or other electronic measuring equipment and importing shot codes into Crash Zone.

-Module 3, students will learn to recognize and analyze motorcycle skid mark evidence, analyze the damage, and calculate the impact and pre-impact speeds through formulas developed for motorcycles and their riders.

-Module 4 will introduce students to pedestrian crash investigations. This module will introduce the skill set and knowledge needed to properly recognize and interpret evidence, determine vehicle initial and impact speeds, and vehicle to pedestrian relationships prior to and during the collision sequence.
